January 15, 2019 We would like to invite you to the 6th edition of the International Slag Valorisation Symposium from 1 to 5 April 2019 in Mechelen, Belgium organized by the Department of Materials Engineering at the KU Leuven. This Symposium provides an overview of the current trends in the worldwide research and innovation strategies for the valorisation of ferrous and non-ferrous slags, fly ash, bottom ash and numerous other high-temperature (metallurgical) residues. October 9, 2018 The research team of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is preparing fire resistant materials utilizing the Copper slag from Metallo Belgium NV. The target is to develop prototypes which can meet the requirements of the ISO–834 time-temperature curve, avoiding damage and yielding phenomena. Additionally, the developed materials should have satisfactory mechanical properties and low density to meet the market requirements. See more

The target is to develop a material which can achieve the requirements of the ISO – 834 time temperature curve without damage and yielding. See more.
June 15, 2018 The RECOVER Project, after the nomination from EIT RawMaterials KIC, applied for the EIT Innovators Award 2018. The EIT Innovators Award recognizes innovation teams composed of individuals from EIT innovation communities that have developed a product, service or process with a high potential for societal and economic impact.
June 14, 2018 Prof. Yiannis Pontikes gave the first keynote lecture in the 5th International Symposium on Sustainable Minerals 2018, Windhoek Namibia, 14th – 15th June 2018, on “Converting Fe-rich residues from metallurgical processes into novel materials: the process, the properties and some performance-based applications”. The RECOVER processes, as well as the activities and outcomes of the project, were presented within the frame of the lecture.
June 11, 2018 Prof. Yiannis Pontikes presented in the 10th International Conference on the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials WASCON 2018 the study: “Developing a more “respectful” cement: from thermodynamic calculations to real–life applications” . The presentation included the efforts and outputs within the frame of RECOVER, in the direction of the study’s objectives.
May 29, 2018 The RECOVER KU Leuven technical team is preparing a set of porous construction material prototypes. The aim is to improve the morphology and the properties of the prototypes in a pilot scale. The prototypes were prepared utilising the Koranel slag from Metallo, milled in the big capacity attritor in KU Leuven’s upscaling facility at Herk-de-Stad. For the specific prototypes, the inorganic polymer mortars were prepared using a Hobart mixer in the SREMat Laboratory at MTM. See more
May 8, 2018 The Secondary Resources for Engineered Materials (SREMat) unit of MTM, KU Leuven organised the 2nd International Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference, 7 -10 May 2018 in Athens, Greece. Lukas Arnout, Lucas Beirao Do Valle, Adrien Nelis, Theodoros Karachalios and Yiannis Pontikes presented the study “Increasing the reactivity of bauxite residue for the use as building material: an alternative activation treatment” conducted within the frame of RECOVER Project.
April 12, 2018 The 3rd RECOVER Project Meeting took place on 12th April 2018, in The Savoy Hotel Limerick, Ireland. During the meeting, the status of the project was discussed and the milestone plan, the objectives and the future actions within the frame of the project were reviewed. The project partners presented their work progress, with emphasis on the updated flow chart of the RECOVER process, the upscaling units and the development of prototypes of two case studies, the porous and fire-resistant construction elements. The meeting closed with a visit at the Aughinish- Rusal Plant on 13th April 2018. See more

October 13, 2017 The Partners of RECOVER visited Mytilineos Metallurgy Business Unit (Aluminium of Greece), the biggest Aluminium producer in Greece. The visit started with the presentation of the Company, followed by a Tour in AoG Plant. The day concluded with a lunch in Paralia Distomou (Aspra Spitia).
October 12, 2017 RECOVER Second Project meeting took place in the Zografou Campus of the National Technical University of Athens on October 12. During the meeting, the Partners of the project presented their progress on the work, The Action list was update and Future plans were also discussed. The meeting closed with a visit to the laboratories in the Metallurgical Department.

August 17, 2017 KU Leuven has booked and area in Herk-de-Stad Industrial Park, to build the modular upscaling units of RECOVER. Four areas of standard 20ft container size have been marked and the available equipment is fitted in the corresponding areas.
May 10, 2017 RECOVER Kick-off Meeting took place in the Department of Materials Engineering (MTM), KU Leuven on 10th May 2017. The Meeting included presentations of the partners activities related to the Project, specification of the Project’s objectives, organization of Project’s activities to meet the requirements and milestones, and finished with a lab tour at MTM facilities.
