Fire-resistant prototypes utilizing Koranel® Cu slag

The research team of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is preparing fire resistant materials utilizing the Copper slag from Metallo Belgium NV. The target is to develop prototypes which can meet the requirements of the ISO–834 time-temperature curve, avoiding damage and yielding phenomena. Additionally, the developed materials should have satisfactory mechanical properties and low density to meet the market requirements. See more

Prof. Yiannis Pontikes gave the first keynote lecture in the 5th International Symposium on Sustainable Minerals 2018, Windhoek Namibia, 14th – 15th June 2018, on “Converting Fe-rich residues from metallurgical processes into novel materials: the process, the properties and some performance-based applications”. The RECOVER processes, as well as the activities and outcomes of the project, were presented within the frame of the lecture.

Porous case study update

The RECOVER KU Leuven technical team is preparing a set of porous construction material prototypes. The aim is to improve the morphology and the properties of the prototypes in a pilot scale. The prototypes were prepared utilising the Koranel slag from Metallo, milled in the big capacity attritor in KU Leuven’s upscaling facility at Herk-de-Stad. For the specific prototypes, the inorganic polymer mortars were prepared using a Hobart mixer in the SREMat Laboratory at MTM. The Secondary Resources for Engineered Materials (SREMat) unit of MTM, KU Leuven organised the 2nd International Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference, 7 -10 May 2018 in Athens, Greece. Lukas Arnout, Lucas Beirao Do Valle, Adrien Nelis, Theodoros Karachalios and Yiannis Pontikes presented the study “Increasing the reactivity of bauxite residue for the use as building material: an alternative activation treatment” conducted within the frame of RECOVER Project.

Big capaity attritor is operational.

The Recover Technical team put in operation a big capaity attritor for Container 4. For the milling of the first batch was use 175 Kg of Koranel Slag from Metallo.

A custom made, 120 ton, high-throughput hydraulic press with a mortar hopper and automatic moulding and demoulding capabilities, has been employed within the frame of RECOVER Project, for the production of dense geopolymer construction elements.

3rd Project Meeting

The 3rd RECOVER Project Meeting took place on 12th April 2018, in The Savoy Hotel Limerick, Ireland. During the meeting, the status of the project was discussed and the milestone plan, the objectives and the future actions within the frame of the project were reviewed.  The project partners presented their work progress, with emphasis on the updated flow chart of the RECOVER process, the upscaling units and the development of prototypes of two case studies, the porous and fire-resistant construction elements. The meeting closed with a visit at the Aughinish- Rusal Plant on 13th April 2018. See more

The RECOVER KU Leuven team prepared the first set of porous building block prototypes, with dimensions 43x32x10 cm, utilizing the Koranel slag from Metallo. The slag was milled employing the small capacity attritor and the mortars were prepared in a HOBART mixer. See more
